Chapter Nineteen

Kelly

Kelly walked into the house feeling grateful to spend Christmas in her new home. Her mother was already decorating, because it was her favorite holiday. “Hi, ma.” There were garlands and lights decorating the railings of the staircase.

“Hi, what do you think,” showing off the tree.” It was the splitting image of a professional tree in the mall.

She went to get a closer look.

“That’s really nice,” sounding impressed. She put down her purse. “I spoke with Chris today.”

“So did I and I told him he should speak with you.”

“I feel he is ready this time. If he wants to join the Army instead of going to college I’m behind him, so after this semester he can move back home until he gets things squared away.”

“Speaking of moving in, what’s going on with you and Rod?”

Kelly sat down. “He won’t be moving in if that’s what you’re getting at.”

“I don’t want to be an excuse why you can’t move forward with your relationship.”

Kelly took off her shoes. “We’re not ready for that. Chris can have the guest bedroom downstairs,” changing the subject.

“That’s a great idea,” still fussing with the tree.

“Kelly stood up. “I have to go and get in the shower. I have a quick job to do.” Cheyenne was going to some awards show. Kelly only agreed to meeting up with Cheyenne this late was because she didn’t have to spend the evening there like she did a couple of weeks ago. Kelly wasn’t that hairstylist that stood in the corner with a comb ready to fix hair.

Kelly met Cheyenne at her hotel.

“Kelly,” holding out her arms for a hug. “Everyone, this is my girl. Don’t sleep on her,” she introduced.

Kelly smiled and waved.

“This is my dad,” bringing her over to meet her father.

He looked like her older brother. He stood up. “It’s nice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“You too,” shaking his hand. “Cheyenne is a good girl.”

“She better,” pointing at Cheyenne.

“Oh, daddy.” She pulled Kelly away to show Kelly the dress she was wearing. It was a gold strapless that was short in the front and long in the back.

Kelly touched her chin. “How about I’ll pull the top up with a French braid with some curls, and then I’ll leave the back and toss it over your shoulder.”

“Anything you do will look great.”

“Okay, let’s get to work then.”

Kelly stayed the night at Rod’s house that night, and in the middle of the night his phone kept ringing but he ignored it. After the third time Kelly woke him up. “Rod!”

“What!”

“Who keeps calling you, your phone keeps ringing?”

He was frustrated by Kelly for waking him up out of a good sleep. He reached over to pick up his phone. “You should’ve answered it,” looking at the screen, but then it rang again. “It’s Dave. Hello.” Rod put him on speaker.

“I’m sorry, man, I didn’t mean to wake you.

“Man, it’s cool. What’s going on,” resting his head against the pillow.

“I really need to talk to you,” sounding desperate.
